Profile of a Sailor
Ever since he was a boy, Martin Romeyn was drawn to the sea. His father took him sailing when he was only 3, and the allure of the waves stayed with him.
Trained as a Marine and physical education teacher in The Netherlands, Romeyn traveled extensively before settling down in the Caribbean — aboard a boat, of course — with wife Saskia, a Dutch beautician-turned-chef.
The couple purchased Random Wind in 1995 and started a family in 1996. Today Romeyn continues to share with visitors his unique perspective on the island’s lovely coves and scenic vistas. To enjoy a private charter, half- or full-day cruise, or sunset trip, call 557-5742.
Their popular Paradise Day Sail is available from Tuesday-Friday. It is a great way to see the sights, starting with breakfast at Ric’s Place just over the Dutch bridge between 8 and 8:30 am. Then out to the boat and set sail up the western coast of St. Maarten. You will stop two or three times for an opportunity to snorkel, swim and for refreshments. Your sail will continue up along the French coast (St. Martin) and then out toward Anguilla before heading back to Simpson Bay. You'll be back at Ric’s Place usually by 4pm.
Lunch is cooked and served on board -- breakfast, snorkel gear, water noodles, snacks, drinks (open bar, juice, beer, wine, famous rum punch and soft drinks), lunch, captain and hostess are all included. The cost per person is only $85 or $40 per child. The boat is licensed to take 22 plus crew but we usually limit it to 18 as that is still comfortable and fun to be with others.
